I'm Alive

1 min read
Hey everybody.  Yes, I'm still alive and kicking; I've just been procrastinating big time (what else is new) about updating my dA.

I finally posted those fireworks pics I promised ages ago, along with a couple sunset shots, a new ID, a Star Trek wallpaper I threw together, and I just remembered that I forgot to post a pic I took of an owl in a barn window.  Coming up right after I finish this posting.

As usual, I apologize for not thanking those who have left comments or :+fav:'s on my deviations.  Hopefully, I can turn over a new leaf this year, and try to keep up with my dA!

The photography bug is starting to bite again, so I will try to take pictures more often, and get them up here within a few days, rather than *counting on fingers* ... seven months ...

Yet again, I have let more than an entire month go by without thanking those people who have marked my pictures as :+fav:'s ... time to go through the list and send out a big ol' "Thank You" to each and every one of you!

Whenever I see a new :+fav: in my inbox, it makes it all worth it, knowing that others are appreciating and enjoying the pictures that I post!

Speaking of posting, I should be posting a slew of new pics sometime soon ... a few sunset pics taken the other night at my fav spot, a few from a thunderstorm a few nights back (didn't get any really great lightning pics, but I tried!  Capturing a lightning shot is even harder than capturing fireworks nicely) ... and speaking of fireworks, I've got some more of those pics to post as well, from a fireworks show on the 7th of July in Wisconsin.

Now, I just need to get motivated enough to crop and frame all those pics, and finally post them.... ;)

Well, after going back through the pictures with my wife, we picked out another 10 pics, so there's a total of 40 fireworks shots that'll be posted in my gallery, A.S.A.P. ... if I get time tomorrow, I'll try to get them all up, but if I don't finish, they won't get up til early next week, as I'm going away for the weekend.

If anyone wants a preview, I posted a contact sheet in my scraps section. :)

I'm mostly happy with the new framing format; I used a 10 px white border around the pic, a 50 px black border beyond that, and an additional 150 px of black at the bottom, wherein I put the title in 60 pt Century Gothic, and my deviant ID in 25 pt Lucida Sans.  This does mean that the text looks bigger or smaller depending on how big the picture is, though...makes some of them look a little funny.  This will also be my first large posting where my pics aren't the usual proportions (1.33 ratio, etc), as I just cropped the pics how I wanted them, then added the fixed frame size to them.

I hope that everyone enjoys them. :)

[EDIT]
There.  All 40 (!) of them are up.  Still can't believe I posted that many. Hope you all enjoy them.  I'm out of here for the weekend; hope to see lots of comments (and, perhaps :+fav:'s? ;) ) in my inbox come Monday morning.  Have a good weekend, all!

Happy 4th, a day late, everyone!

I took tons of fireworks shots last night, trying to go thru them all now to see what ones I wanna post...narrowed it down to 70 out of the 211 pics I took, so far.  I'll probably knock it down to at least half that; I don't wanna flood my gallery with that many fireworks shots (do I??) ... ;)

I used the Fireworks scene mode on my new Canon; they turned out okay...looks like that mode sets it to a longer exposure; all streaks of light, rather than points, but that's okay, some of them turned out pretty cool.  Next time I try to take pics of fireworks, though, I'll have to try to experiment with the settings a little, and see what other effects I can get.

I'm also trying to decide if / how I want to frame these pics...kind of like my moon shots, where the background is black, I can't use my standard black frame, but I'm not even sure if a frame would look that good on the fireworks pics.  I might just put my username on them, and be done with it.

Anyways, hope everyone had a great holiday, and expect to see a bunch of fireworks shots up in my gallery sometime in the next couple of days!

[EDIT]  I've narrowed the field to 30, and I've decided to post them all.  I'm in the process of framing them now (came up with a nice, clean frame, courtesy of a framing tutorial by facist, "Framing Your Works"), and will hopefully have them up sometime tomorrow. [/EDIT]

The new camera is working out GREAT.  Now, when I review the shots I take at any given time, I don't think "gotta pick the ones that turned out", I instead think "now which of these shots do I like the best?". :)

The days of half of my pictures or more turning out blurry and unusable are pretty much a thing of the past.  Thank you, Image Stabilization!

I'm loving the zoom; it makes such a huge difference to be able to zoom in that far and frame your shots differently, and still have them come out at full resolution and quality.  I don't think I could ever go back to a camera without at least 10x zoom, after using this.

Battery life has been as great as the reviews promised.  I'm still on the first charge of my rechargable AA's (and even better, since they're the Sanyo Eneloop brand, I didn't even have to charge them before the first use; right into the camera straight outta the packaging), and I've taken at least 400 pictures so far.  Far surpasses my old camera.

I'd highly recommend the S3 to anyone looking to buy a non-SLR digital camera.  Plenty of manual settings for those who want more control than simple point-and-shoot, but still easy enough with lots of automatic scene/portrait/sports/etc. modes for those who just want to point-and-shoot.  Well worth the money spent, in my opinion. :)
